Zero Waste Victoria’s 2024-27 action plan commits to exploring new ways of collecting materials that aren’t picked up at the curb. While the CRD’s blue box program handles many recyclables, 64 per cent of residents report challenges recycling harder-to-process materials like flexible plastics, foam packaging and small electronics.
The 2025 Beyond the Curb pilot program tested several drop-off recycling options including booths at community markets, pop-up events in underserved neighbourhoods and an accessible weekend recycling hub. This initiative aligns with the CRD’s Solid Waste Management Plan and supports Zero Waste Victoria’s goal to reduce waste disposal by 50 per cent by 2040.
As we approach the end of the pilot, we are collecting information from the public to help inform a future, permanent program.
