Waste Collection Service for Multi-Family Buildings

The City was seeking feedback from strata councils and property managers to help staff design a new municipal service to collect recycling, organics and garbage from apartment buildings, condos and townhouses across our community.

BACKGROUND

In June 2023, Council directed staff to develop and report back on options for a municipal solid waste collection service for multi-family buildings that would increase the diversion of recyclables and organics from landfill disposal and reduce the impacts of collection operations on emissions, noise, traffic and parking in residential neighbourhoods.

Understanding the current challenges and opportunities related to waste collection in multi-family buildings directly from the people who manage and make decisions for these properties is vital to the development of a cost-competitive municipal service that will bring clear benefits to the community and support more equitable access to excellent solid waste services for all residents.

Therefore, the City asked strata councils and property managers for apartment buildings, condos and townhouses to tell us about their current service and what opportunities they see for improvement through an online survey which closed April 30. These details will help staff create a collection service for a variety of building types that is affordable, easy-to-use and will help divert more waste from landfill disposal.

Thank You For Your Input

Thank you to all those who participated in the online survey. An engagement summary of all the input received will be included in the report back to Council.

    Hello!

Thank you for your participation in this engagement process.

This survey is for strata council members and managers of residential buildings including condos, apartments and townhouses.

For the purposes of this survey, a strata corporation or rental property that has multiple buildings (e.g. blocks of townhouses) is considered one building. For strata corporations that contain both residential and commercial strata lots, please focus your answer on services for the residential strata lots only if possible.

These details will help City staff create a waste collection service that is affordable, easy-to-use and will help residents divert more waste from landfill disposal.

The City of Victoria may collect your personal information for the purposes of administering the survey.
