Victoria Climate Action

Victoria is experiencing the impacts of climate change, from dangerous summer heat to more frequent and severe storms year-round. These impacts affect everyone in Victoria, as well as our environment and economy.

To protect the community we love, we need to come together and act now to reduce carbon pollution, and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Achieving the City’s bold climate targets will take a community-wide effort. The City is responding by reducing carbon emissions and strengthening the community's ability to withstand the effects of climate change.

We want to know how the City can support you in taking climate action. Your feedback will also help identify actions that the City should focus on.

You can participate by taking the survey, sharing your ideas in the online discussion forum, attending an open house or registering for an online information session.

The feedback collected through this engagement process will help inform the City’s update to the Climate Leadership Plan and the new Climate Change Adaptation Plan.

An engagement summary of all public feedback will be posted online and presented to Council.

Partner Engagement

The City of Victoria has contacted local First Nations, a wide range of community-based organizations, public institutions and other governments inviting them to share feedback on the following focus areas:

  1. Adaptation: Strategies to prepare for and enhance community resilience to climate impacts, such as extreme weather events, sea level rise and biodiversity loss. We are particularly interested in local vulnerabilities, innovative adaptation measures and perspectives from your organization. 

  1. Transportation: Efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainable mobility. Insights on public transportation improvements, active transportation initiatives (walking and cycling), electric vehicle infrastructure and other measures.  

  1. Buildings: Approaches to electrify, reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency in residential, commercial and public buildings. This includes upgrading heating equipment to all-electric heat pumps for year-round comfort. 

  1. Waste: Strategies to reduce waste by promoting reuse and ensuring all other materials are recycled and composted, including ideas for innovative waste reduction programs, house moving and deconstruction, community education efforts and effective waste management practices that support the growth of a circular economy. 

  2. Climate equity: Ensuring climate strategies are equitable and address the concerns of equity-owed and historically marginalized groups.

  • Victoria Climate Action Survey

    The City of Victoria is updating its Climate Leadership Plan and creating a Climate Adaptation Plan. The City’s first Climate Leadership Plan was released in 2018, and the most recent progress report came out in 2022.  

    Achieving the City’s bold climate targets will take a community-wide effort. The City is responding by reducing carbon emissions and strengthening the community's ability to withstand the impacts of climate change.    

    The survey has five sections: 

    • Personal Climate Action 
    • Sustainable Transportation 
    • Climate Friendly Buildings 
    • Zero Waste 
    • City-led Climate Action Initiatives 

    The survey results will help us:

    • Make it easier for people in Victoria to take climate action 
    • Prioritize actions that the City should take in response to climate change 


    Your feedback, along with input from community-based organizations, public institutions and other governments will help inform the City’s update to the Climate Leadership Plan and the new Climate Change Adaptation Plan.    

    The City plans to present the two plans to Council next year, along with an engagement summary of all public feedback. 

    The survey is open until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024.
