Victoria Climate Action

This survey is now closed. Thank you for taking the time to have your say on Victoria Climate Action. An engagement summary of all public feedback will be posted online and presented to Council.

Victoria is experiencing the impacts of climate change, from dangerous summer heat to more frequent and severe storms year-round. These impacts affect everyone in Victoria, as well as our environment and economy.

To protect the community we love, we need to come together and act now to reduce carbon pollution, and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Achieving the City’s bold climate targets will take a community-wide effort. The City is responding by reducing carbon emissions and strengthening the community's ability to withstand the effects of climate change.

We want to know how the City can support you in taking climate action. Your feedback will also help identify actions that the City should focus on.

An online survey and discussion forum were open from September 5 to October 11, 2024. We also popped up at four community events and once at Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre and held an open house and an online information session.

The feedback collected through this engagement process will help inform the City’s update to the Climate Leadership Plan and the new Climate Change Adaptation Plan.

Partner Engagement

The City of Victoria contacted local First Nations, a wide range of community-based organizations, public institutions and other governments inviting them to share feedback on the following focus areas:

  1. Adaptation: Strategies to prepare for and enhance community resilience to climate impacts, such as extreme weather events, sea level rise and biodiversity loss. We are particularly interested in local vulnerabilities, innovative adaptation measures and perspectives from your organization.

  1. Transportation: Efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainable mobility. Insights on public transportation improvements, active transportation initiatives (walking and cycling), electric vehicle infrastructure and other measures.

  1. Buildings: Approaches to electrify, reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency in residential, commercial and public buildings. This includes upgrading heating equipment to all-electric heat pumps for year-round comfort.

  1. Waste: Strategies to reduce waste by promoting reuse and ensuring all other materials are recycled and composted, including ideas for innovative waste reduction programs, house moving and deconstruction, community education efforts and effective waste management practices that support the growth of a circular economy.

  2. Climate equity: Ensuring climate strategies are equitable and address the concerns of equity-owed and historically marginalized groups.

Many climate actions not only reduce your carbon footprint but have other benefits too – like saving money over time or improving physical or mental health. For example, biking or walking instead of driving and eating a more plant-based diet.

What extra benefits have you seen from your climate actions?

What climate actions do you take that help make life more affordable?

About half of community carbon emissions in Victoria are from buildings.

What are some ways that you could reduce your emissions at home?

What have you already done? This could include ways of switching to electricity and away from gas and oil and/or improving energy efficiency.

There is a lot of information out there about climate change.

How do you access information on reducing your carbon footprint, and how to prepare and respond to climate impacts?

How can the City improve the way we share information about climate action?

Let us know in the comments below.

Let's talk about it! Each week, we’ll share a new question for everyone in Victoria to discuss.

While we live in a place that generally has a mild climate, we are experiencing hotter and drier summers on average, and more severe rain and snow due to climate change. What unusual or extreme weather events have you personally experienced in Victoria?
