Placemaking Toolkit

Help us refine the City of Victoria’s Draft Placemaking Toolkit!

Placemaking is a collaborative process where people work together to create vibrant public spaces that contribute to people’s health, happiness and well-being. Victoria has many great examples of placemaking ranging from light installations to parklets, art projects to boulevard gardens. See the My Great Neighbourhood Grant project gallery for examples.

We have created a Placemaking Toolkit to give people the tools they need to bring people together and enhance the quality of life in their neighbourhood. The Placemaking Toolkit is focused on grassroots, community-led placemaking that can be implemented through existing city programs and grants that support placemaking including the My Great Neighbourhood Grant Program and this year Participatory Budgeting as well.

What we’re engaging on:

We are excited to introduce our new Draft Placemaking Toolkit to help you create vibrant public spaces that bring people together.

From inspiration to practical tips, the toolkit has everything you need to get started. The Toolkit gives an overview of the placemaking process, examples of placemaking in Victoria and strategies for successfully completing projects of all shapes and sizes. It also includes a catalogue of pre-approved furniture, paint and lighting to make it quicker and easier for you to take your project from idea to reality.

How we got here:

The creation of a Placemaking Toolkit and implementation strategy is in Council’s Strategic Plan.

The goal of the Placemaking Toolkit is to support citizens and businesses to take action to create public play spaces, parklets, and gathering places within neighbourhoods.

It builds on the My Great Neighbourhoods Program and provides information, strategies and ideas to encourage community-led placemaking.

What decision is being made now? What input are we seeking now?

We are looking to collect feedback on the Draft Placemaking Toolkit. Please let us know if the Toolkit is easy to use and if it inspires you to start a placemaking project of your own.

When will we be seeking public input?

This is the last step before we finalize the Toolkit. After receiving public input this summer, we will make improvements to the toolkit and release the final version later this year. The Placemaking Toolkit will be a "living document" so it will be reviewed and improved regularly.

What is the level of public participation?

This engagement is at the inform / consult level.

How will input be sought?
